Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) sealed a nail-biting win by a margin of 12 runs against the Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Wankhede Stadium, their first win against MI at this venue in 10 years. This comes after RCB scored an upset win against the Chennai Super Kings at Chepauk after 17 years. RCB will now add winning against MI at Wankhede Stadium to their momentum of breaking long jinxes in IPL 2025.
RCB put a challenging total of 221/5 on the scoreboard, thanks to notable innings from Virat Kohli (67 off 36) and Rajat Patidar (64 off 33). Kohli’s fifty, which was his fastest in IPL since 2019, came off just 29 balls, and set the platform for RCB’s aggressive start to the innings. Patidar complemented Kohli perfectly, taking on MI’s premier bowlers, such as Hardik Pandya, whose individual figures came in at 4-0-45-2. RCB lost wickets at regular intervals, but they had a strong finish thanks to Jitesh Sharma’s innings of 40 off 19 balls that helped push the score beyond MI’s reach.
MI’s pursuit was far from typical. With MI at 99/4 in the 12th over, Hardik Pandya and Tilak Varma flipped the match. They scored 89 runs in just 34 balls with Hardik smashing 42 in 15 balls and Tilak plundering 56 in just 29. Although MI had got ahead of RCB, needing 41 off the last three overs, it looked set for an exciting end.
That said, RCB’s bowlers also did well under pressure. Josh Hazlewood and Bhuvneshwar Kumar bowled some clutch 18th and 19th overs, executing their yorkers astutely and holding MI in check. MI needed 19 off the last over, and Krunal Pandya held MI just short enough to wrap up the game and RCB’s win. Krunal’s bowling figures of 4-0-45-4 were the best figures of his IPL career.
The win means that RCB has continued to Siege the season in IPL 2025, while MI now has back-to-back losses. Despite a late surge, thing boiled down to RCB’s disciplined bowling and a sound middle-order partnership.
