He was from a family of intellectuals, his father Vishnu Vasudev Narlikar being one of them, who had an educational background in mathematics and theoretical physics, in his mother, who also considers excellence as a Sanskrit scholar. He earned his BSc degree in 1957 from Banaras Hindu University. Narlikar shifted to Cambridge for postgraduate studies in 1959, where he received a BA (Tripos) in mathematics and was distinguished as the Senior Wrangler. He earned his PhD in 1963 working under the tutelage of Fred Hoyle.

Subsequently, his dream came true in establishing the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) at Pune in 1988, where he later became the first director.

Co-developing the Hoyle-Narlikar theory of gravitation with Fred Hoyle was Narlikar’s greatest scientific achievement. It combines Einstein’s theory of relativity and Mach’s principle, which practically establishes that any particle’s inertial mass depends upon the mass of all the other particles as a function with a coupling constant that varies in response to various periods of the universe.

Honors and Recognitions

Narlikar’s illustrious career has been blessed with many awards, including the highest awards. Along with being awarded India’s third-highest civilian honor, Padma Bhushan, in 1965, he was also awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 2004. He was awarded several other awards and honors during his lifetime, including the Smith Prize, the Adams Prize, the Kalinga Prize, and the Sahitya Akademi Award (for autobiography) in 2014. In May 2023, the Astronomical Society of India awarded him the inaugural Govind Swarup Lifetime Achievement Award for exceptional scientific contributions towards astronomy and astrophysics.

Among his nieces is Amrita Narlikar, a renowned social science scholar in Cambridge University.
